You might have heard about the golden 80/20 rule of marketing. It’s the holy grail to every marketer out there! But there are only a few who are actually following it.

What is the 80/20 rule of marketing?

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes

Pareto showed that approximately 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. This can be easily observed in a lot of real-time business models even today.

How can you apply 80/20 rule to increase your traffic?

In the world of digital marketing to put it simply, all we have to do is spend 20% of the time in planning & creating content and 80% of the time to promote the content.

Phase 1: Planning

Plan a clean layout for your website:

A fact:

Intentional and strategic user experience has the potential to raise conversion rates by as much as 400%.

(Forbes)

This implies User experience is directly proportional to the time spent on your site. Not only does it decrease the bounce rates but also helps in engagements & shares on your site.

A website with clean UI has:

  1.  Very less number of ads and ad banners:

420 million people around the world use ad blockers, and poor user experience caused by ads is the most cited reason.

So, make sure, you have your ad banner’s position in such a way that it does not bother the user.

2. Clear call – to -actions:

Over 70% of small business websites do not use the call to action buttons.

A call to action button is a very small but effective tool that a majority of the market is surprisingly not utilizing yet.

A proper call to action can lead your visitor to take the desired action on your site hence leading to a conversion.

3. Readable fonts

Honestly, this mistake is the worst of all the mistakes you can ever make. Having bad fonts can make your visitors go away in just a fraction of seconds.

Look at this image below:

These kinds of designs just hurt the eyes of the users and you should forget about any traffic let alone any conversion here.

In case you have no idea about designing a website, you can make a website for free or very cheap rates from wordpress and Wix

4. Good quality images

Good images are not just about having High resolution but also about how they convey the message

Why is a good quality image important? Well, for that you need to look at this:

This kind of image makes you look very unprofessional & hence you might not get any customers out of it.

If you cannot afford to hire a graphic designer you can easily go to Royalty-free image sites like Freepik, Pexels, PixaBay.

All you have to do is make sure to credit the real creator & choose relevant images to your site theme and colors.

Plan a content strategy:

Once you have completed your website layout it’s time to work on your content strategy. A good content strategy is the key to get traffic on your website.

72% of marketers are using content marketing. 30% of them are using a documented strategy, while 42% have an undocumented content marketing strategy.

And so, I will teach you how to document, create and plan content strategy.

1. Create a content repository –

A content repository is a collection of all possible content that you have used in the past or you will use for your website in the future.

This helps you keep track of:

  • Amount & Frequency of the content used
  • Tracking repetition & Re-using of content

How do you make a content repository?

That’s simple,

I will show you how to make this on Google sheets (we use google sheets as it’s easy to share with the whole team)Make a list of of all the content that you want to use on your websites like blog, microblog, article, newsletter or just ideas for creating the content and put it together in a sheet.

2. Make a content planner

The content planner is basically a plan of how and what content you want to put out on your site in the future.

Here’s an example of what a content planner should look like:

Plan word count:

Decide the word count that you can produce in a month.

Fact: 60% of marketers produce at least one piece of content every single day.

But, it totally depends on you and the nature of your business.

If you have a service / B2B site, publishing impactful content with high word count would be more effective and lead to conversions.

And you have a blogging site/news & current affair/ B2C site small pieces of multiple content daily would help much more to get traffic on your website

Remember, the more words you publish the more total traffic you will get

Do your research – Before you start making content make sure you have your topics listed down. Do not pick up topics randomly. Use tools like googletrends or buzzsumo to see what is trending currently in your target audience.
